Literature: Integrating text across skills through "The Whale Rider"
I will present the various components of the reading program in the Course of International and Cultural Studies at Kyoto Gaidai Nishi High School. Presently, we are in the 3rd and final year of a 3 year SELHi (Super English Language High School) project sponsored by Mombusho. Our SELHi project concentrates on vocabulary acquisition using the Academic Word List compiled by Averil Coxhead of Victoria University in New Zealand, and a version of the General Service List created in 1995 by John Bauman and Brent Culligan. I will introduce reading activities focusing on graded readers, short stories, movies and the novel The Whale Rider, by Witi Ihimaera.
